How to register to Vote?
Registering to vote isn't as difficult as most of us think.
To register to vote, you must fulfil all these criteria.
• You must be at least 18 years old as of 1st January of the current year.
• You must be a citizen of India, not a holder of a foreign passport.
• You must have been ordinarily resident at the place you are registering from for at least 6 months.
1. Fill a form 6. This is to add your name onto the voter rolls. You can download it from http://www.ceokarnataka.kar.nic.in/Forms/indexw.html.
2. Fill in all the details about yourself and sign at the back. The details are simple: your name with surname, DOB, father’s name, and home address. If other member of the family are registered, then you need to give their details (names, booth number and serial no) on the back page. Attach photo copy of any one of your address proof (i.e. phone bill, electricity bill, rental agreement, bona fide certificate issued by college, your passport photo copy, your gas bill, your bank pass book which carries the address on the front page etc, which either need to be in your name or in your father’s/Husbands name) and age proof if you are registering between 18-21 years of age ( best and most acceptable is your 10th Std marks card).
3. You will also need to fill the assembly constituency name and number on the front of the form (e.g., BTM layout no. 172). This you can find out from your neighbour or go to the office where you pay your house tax. Assistant revenue officer (ARO) is your assistant returning officer for the voter’s list (ARO is seated in the Koramangala Ward Office (Located in the 5th Block).
4. Give the completed form to your ARO and make sure that the officer gives you back the counterfoil duly signed. Keep this piece of paper carefully as this is very useful if you need to check, especially if your name is not on the voter’s list.
5. Keep track of the newspapers, and when the SEC (State Election Commission) announces that the voter's list for your area is published, go to your ARO or to www.bbmpelections.info and search for your name on the voter’s list. Once you find it, make note of your part number (polling booth number) and serial number in that part. You are now eligible to vote even if you do not have an EPIC (Electronic Photo Identity Card) card. In its place you must carry a Government issued photo identity card such as Driver’s Licence, PAN Card, Senior Citizen Card etc.
6. When the EC (Election Commission ) announces the drive to issue voter ID cards in your area (again in the newspaper), go to the school where it is happening armed with your serial no. and part no. and get your EPIC. When the is being made, make sure that you check all the details are being typed correctly.
7. Remember the part and serial no. as this is needed on the day of voting but not written on the EPIC.
8. About 45 days before every election, the voter’s list comes up for scrutiny and it is our duty and responsibility to check that our name is on the voter’s list. DO not presume that just because you have an EPIC, your name is present in the list. The voter’s list is dynamic and keeps undergoing many changes.
NOW THAT YOUR NAME IS ON THE VOTER’S LIST – AND YOUR HAVE YOUR EPIC CARD, PLEASE DO VOTE.
